I currently use ting, as long as you don't use a shitton of data, messages, or calling its pretty affordable, I've got myself locked down to 1000 or less messages per month and 500MB of data, then I try to not use calling at all and that puts my bill at around $24, though I dislike how voicemail will use up minutes, and how quickly your bill can grow...

I don't use Ting, but you can get much more for your money.

If you get a GSM phone and don't talk that much, then get T-Mobile's $30 a month plan that gives you 100 minutes, unlimited texting (international too), and 5GB of 4G/LTE data with unlimited 2G after that.

If you want to stay on a Sprint network, there's quite a few other MVNOs out there. If you don't do much on your phone, then Freedompop was a free (seriously) smartphone. It gives you 200 minutes, 500 texts, and 500MB of data. Not bad for free, eh? They also have other plans that range from around $7 a month to $20. Definitely worth a look.
