Replacing Nvidia with Amd

Captain_France
Go to solution Solved by Opcode,
  1. Uninstall the Nvidia drivers.
  2. Shut the machine down.
  3. Replace the GPU.
  4. Boot Windows back up and install Catalyst.

I doubt there will be any problems between the two driver suites.

I am getting ready to replace my 750ti with an R9 290x and I'm wondering how to go about it.

What's the quickest way to uninstall and reinstall all the new drivers?

Any tips?

I'm afraid to swear now because the overlords might hurt me.

I usually just install the new drivers and not worry about older drivers unless I encounter an issue later down the road.

Disagree. There can be conflicting DLLs and other conflicts by leaving both software packages on the machine.

Just go in and uninstall the Nvidia suite via the control panel "Add and Remove Programs" or "Programs and Features" utility, reboot and install the AMD driver kit.

You can install the new board before doing these steps though.

I'm not saying that it always works--that's just what I do and it works fine more often than not.

I normally prefer to install the new GPU in the system first as Windows "Found new Hardware" wizard will often re-install the driver in the background while you aren't looking.

Alex

It will only install Windows basic drivers as there are none installed on the machine. Which is perfectly fine as it will use the Catalyst driver once you install it and reboot.
