One is enough, I ran one 970 on 1440p for a few weeks, no problems at all.

 

I just bought a second one, the only things that changed were now I can play with AA + other filters on max, games don't really look all that much different though.

Well a 780 is close to a 970 in terms of performance, and my 780 gives me a great gaming experience at 1440p. A single card should be plenty of horsepower.

One card is more then enough. Been running 1440p on a single 780 Classy for about a year now and works perfect.
