CPU or GPU watercooling?

Is it worth it to spend extra money on water cooling for my intel core i7 4790k if i want to over clock it?

Isnt it more worth for me to spend that extra money rather on getting water cooling for my nvidia geforce GTX 970 GPU if i want to overclock it?

Why do most people rather watercool their CPU?

You don't have to water cool it. The reason why people water cool their CPU is because the stock cooler can't get you far in overclocking, you probably won't even be able to overclock it. And with GPUs, the air coolers on the GPU are strong enough to keep it from getting fried at high clock speeds.

1. Water cooling has diminishing returns compared to air cooling so is it worth it? For me i would say no

Custom water cooling computer parts results in lower temperatures than air cooling and it can make your rig look real badass. Is it worth going down that route? Most people who water cool will say no, but like I said, it's not just about the performance factor - it's about the looks as well. Granted, you could also go with an all-in-one type water cooler, but you can also go for air cooling that will perform similarly at a much lower cost. In addition, water cooling adds another point of failure. If your pump(s) give(s) out, your components will overheat.

water cooling is quieter to a degree, and allows for more thermal headroom but it is not really a huge improvement. it's really just an enthusiast thing to make your system that much more balls-to-the-walls

As stated above overclocking a cpu generates alot more heat than the factory heatsink can dissapate. Manufactures don't really intend for anyone to overclock using factory parts. GPU's on the other are made to have head room for overclocking. The fan system on a GPU is made to withstand overclocking because upgrading the gpu cooling normally only leads you to the only other option which is watercooling. CPU's have a multitude of options as far as aftermarket cooling options. People who water cool their cpu basically say why not? It will give them a whole lot more headroom for overclocking and doing so will speed up your processor.

Yes. However, that does not mean that you have to water cool your GPU. Also, you can just buy a high end air cooler, like Noctua NH-D15 or the Dark Rock Pro 3. They're strong enough to get you to high clock speeds

I have both GPU's and CPU under water.... I will most likely NEVER go back to air cooling.... my 4770K is over clocked to 4.5GHz (from 3.5GHz) with temps never surpassing 57C under FULL LOAD and 30ish at idle and my GPU's (currently using 7950's CF) I have never seen go higher than 38 degrees under FULL LOAD..... 

 

I recently bought two R9 290x and i'm just waiting for my water blocks to come in..

 

 

full custom loop water cooling IS expensive... so before venturing on down that route... plan ahead, watch youtube videos and read lots and lots of threads about it....
