2x7950 or single R9 290?

Go to solution Solved by LmeAde2,

Go with a single Sapphire R9 290 TRI-X OC http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HJOXUKC. I actually had a pair of 7950's and the rest of the comments are correct, you will see great performance in some games like Crysis 3 and BF4 but there are other games that are NVIDIA optimized that you won't see a big performance gain from.

Hi, i'm looking to upgrade my gpu and have found some refurbished MSI Twin Frozor iii HD 7950's for £90 each. My question is should i crossfire two of these or should i save for a bit longer for a single R9 290 which start at around £230?
Please note whenever i upgrade my PC/ build a new PC i'm always on a budget. This is why i'm interested in these 7950's. Especially with some Christmas money heading my way. Hoepfully.......
Any advice would be hugely appreciated.
Thankyou!

Depends on what games you play. Not all games scale good with CF. Usualy single more powerfull card is better than two less powerfull cards.

This is pretty true. Crossfire does not work well at lower res like 1080p in some games

I'd go for the R9290,  specifically the Sapphire Tri-X model. It seems to be one of the best coolers for the card and Linus has several videos on the channel now about why a single GPU is better than two worse ones. Some games don't support Crossfire X and frame rates may not remain stable during gameplay. Hope this helps :)

I play many different games. I guess my most played are COD, Battlefield, Dayz, ETS2. Although like i said i play a variety. All played at 1080p although i do plan on upgrading to 1440p.

My current CPU is a AMD FX8350.

single r9 290, crossfire that sometime later down the line. cfx on the r9 290/x and r9 285 is superior to previous cfx methods.

If they are refurbished go for the 290, you really don't need more power than that (in fact the 290 is overkill too) for 1080p and refurbished cards could give you problems down the line.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Thanks for the replies, i was kind of leaning towards the single 290. I was just thinking of saving money!
Would it be worth to wait until AMD release some of their new GPUs just incase there might be price cuts???

Ebuyer has the MSI 290 for £200

But as for waiting the gtx 960 should be releasing soon and depending on the performance of that card it may have an effect on pricing plus AMD should be releasing their new GPUs soon if you can wait then wait if not get the 290 less headaches.

Would a single 7950 be able to handle modern games like BF4, COD:AW and Shadow of Mordor well. E.g. Max out the settings with good frame rates???
