Only the leds won't work if plugged the other way (but you still don't damage anything if you do, it's safe).

 

It's more likely that you plugged them incorrectly, I know it's a hassle but try re-doing them again; you can use a flat screwdriver to touch both pins at the  same time and start the PC with that.

Yeah.  FP connectors are really stupid and IMO there has to be a better way to do it, but for now, just consult the manual.  There should be a little tiny arrow on the side of the connector that doesn't have printing that tells you which lead is positive.  Only disadvantage to black FP connectors.  In colored ones, black is always negative.
