780 vs. r9 290?

Hey guys I have just decided to upgrade my gpu but I'm desperate to decide which one to take. Get a Zotac 780 or a Sapphire R9 290. I have searched through some forums and stuff but the opinions were very different. So I've decided to ask it to you guys. I'm currently running on a i7 960 and GTX550Ti. I don't play fps nor MMO. I'm preparing my build for the Crew and Project CARS. So if those cards are overkill, please tell me. Currently prices of those cards are nearly same in my country (Turkey) (412USD for AMD and 422USD for Nvidia) Also, is i7 960 too old or would a cpu overclock be enough? (os: Windows 10TP)

Look for the 290 used it should be about 200

It is not a good idea to buy used in Turkey. They are usually bitcoin mining machines.

 

Not overkill. Both games prefer Nvidia GPUs.

Just overclocking your old i7 should be fine.

Looked at the benchmarks and looks like the 780 is the better option for me. But if you guys have further recommendations for me, please say them. I'll mark this thread as solved. Thanks for the rapid response.

I had 780's and they were good. I prefer nVidia, so I'd go with that.

Ok. guys I've decided to get the Nvidia 780 in 2 or 3 weeks. I am getting the Zotac's reference model without the O.C. or AMP. It will cost me 422 bucks. Also will overclock my old veteran i7 960. Thanks for your help.

Kepler is really taking a hit in latest games.

Wouldn't you be able to get GTX 970 for as much or even cheaper?

 

GTX 970 is more powerful than 780 and should be around same price range, also getting you 4Gb (780 is 3Gb as far as I remember) and better cooling with lower power consumption.

If you can get 970 for around same price, don't hold back and go for it.

 

 

Also as said, NVidia performs great in The Crew and PCars.

Yeah looks like the 290 is better in some cases. Thank you for making me think again but they are saying that project cars is preferring Nvidia... Which is my case...

Idk man. I don't think I can rely on a used card EDIT:I've just found a slightly used asus oc'd 780 for 300bucks. I will contact the seller asap and will inform you guys if I get that card

Weirdly we only have 980 from the 9xx lineup in Turkey. But if I manage to find a 970, Ill definitely get it. EDIT:Ok I found one but its 612usd. Its too much for me.
