questions about ram

I just had a few things I wanted clarified about ram,

 

for pretty much all motherboards they can take ddr3 1333-1600 ram no problem, however I noticed for about all motherboards that when it comes to any speed higher than that, like 1866 and onwards it would say overclock.

 

What exactly does that mean? does that mean I'd have to overclock my cpu or ram or something? (I've never overclocked anything before)

 

How exactly does that work, like if I wanted to use 2133 speed ram or something.

 

the cpu I'd be using is an i7-4790k, and the mobo an MSI z97 gaming 7 http://www.msi.com/support/mb/Z97-GAMING-7.html#support-ocmem

You don't need to do any overclocking or anything, just don't worry about it, all you do is after you install ANY RAM you go into the motherboard bios and add an XMP profile, then that RAM will run at it's rated speeds

You would technically have to overclock your ram but most good ram that is say rated for 1866 on the package comes with whats called an XMP profile which you can load from your BIOS and it automatically overclocks the ram for you to get those settings but dont worry about it especially if you dont know anything about it just buy some 1600mhz ram and youll be fine.

I most likely will just get 1600mhz speed ram, but if i came across some that was around the same price but higher speed i'd consider that

1866mhz ram running at CAS9 is a sweet spot for DDR3 and is what most people should get

There is no problem with that but ill be honest 1866 is the most youll really ever need except for a few special circumstances.

Speaking of which, I just found just that at the same price as 1600 speed ram Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory

so i'll go with the 1866 one

so i'll go with the 1866 one

That 1866mhz one is the same ram that I am getting, it's really good, it's faster than the 1600mhz because it also has the same CAS9 rating

Go with the 1866mhz CL9 RAM
