I have a 4790k with no oc currently and a gtx 780ti oc'd. I am currently using the stock cooler (it's amazing how inadequate it is for the 4790k, definitely need to replace it as soon as possible) as I'm in between coolers for my CPU.

I was watching some YouTube videos ranging from 1080p up to 4K and had a few tabs open in chrome and my cpu seemed to be doing all the work, running the tabs and running the vid, pushing its temp into the mid 80s while the GPU usage only goes up to 20% max. CPU usage was at about 50% and turboing to 4.4Ghz.

I thought the GPU would do all the video work and the CPU would do everything else? Am I just wrong and the GPU stays out of it until some really heavy stuff comes along or are there some settings that can be tweaked?

Edit: Just browsing the forum tops out at 92C. I think I might need to redo the fans as I feel like I accidentally set them all to exhaust and currently only have the GPU fans in taking air... ops. That or it isn't properly seated.

Stop using Chrome #1, use Firefox.  #2, get at least a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.  80C for just web browsing and watching a video is insanity!  Are you sure its even mounted properly?

CPU is doing all the work decoding the video. I can't imagine it would use that much though.

Shouldn't the GPU decode the vid as it is designed to work with pixels? It has a hardware decoder capable of 4K.

I had an H100i but it's going into a different computer and i'm only using the stock while I get my new cooler. I would never use the stock Intel cooler for any extended amount of time. There is a chance it's seated incorrectly and I will look into that plus checking my fans to make sure they are not all exhaust. About the chrome vs Firefox I prefer chrome more :)

That is totally insane, I have an ancient X3 8750B setup and I watch HD videos on youtube all the time with multiple tabs open and never ever does my CPU load up like that, a 4790K would be more or less sleeping at that kind of load. The stock heatsink is a mess, but temps should never go that high, especially on a haswell chip. Reseat the heatsink, check if there is appropriate thermal paste on the CPU, and if there is enough airflow through the case. Also it maybe that the CPU fan is not responding to the high temps and ramping up, check if it is connected to the correct header. Run a stress test and see if the fans spin faster or not.

Lol the fan is definitely ramping up as I can hear it over my music with my headphones on. I think a stress test will trip the temp safety stuff as browsing is hitting 92C. I think it not being seated properly is likely the culprit or me putting all the fans to exhaust but I still don't get how I'm hitting 50% usage watching a vid with ~5 tabs open.

I'l reseat the heatsink tomorrow and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I might need to take back the H100i for the time being :(

It also seems to be chromes fault as running 1 4k, 1 1440p, and 3 tabs in Firefox maxed out at 83C and 25% load :)

Still won't switch to chrome.
