4790k is unlocked meaning overclockable

4790 is locked meaning non overclockable

4790s is low power

No, only K is.

4790 -> H97 motherboard 

4790s -> H97 motherboard

The i7-4790k is 500MHz faster out the box than the i7-4790 and can be overclocked

 

The i7-4790 is overpriced; for 100MHz less get the Xeon E3-1231v3 and save yourself $50

 

The i7-4790s is a lower power version. Skip this one for a desktop.

Why the i5 over the FX-8350?
