So my friend is trying to install WIN 8 on a new computer.  The PC was running fine (only to the BIOS of course) until he plugged in the USB.  On the USB he has WIN 8 mounted on it.  He used rufus with these settings

post-129573-0-31230700-1418783678.png

After he mounted it he ejected it.  Put it in his new PC then started it.  It gave him this message "Overcurrent have been detected on your USB device system will shutdown after 15 seconds to protect your main board".  Now he has tried removing the USB, booting up.  He gets the same message.  He tried re-mounting the USB and this still happened.  What is the fix?

The USB is drawing more power than it should be. Don't think it has anything to do with Rufus' config.

Well what should he do to fix?  Also even when he booted without the USB now it says that.

Doubt this'll work, but try clearing the CMOS and trying again. Other than that, I've never had an issue like this so I can't say much.

Just take the battery out and cut all power for a minute or two, or jump the two pins on the mobo for CLR_CMOS (or something along those lines, if the board has it). And of course, do that when the computer is off.

The battery is the flat metal thing (think: watch battery) to the immediate left of the PCIe x1 (small black, in between the blue and long black.)

As tmcclelland said, or following the instructions in the manual for the motherboard, which is available online if you don't have a physical copy if he didn't explain it well enough.

He did this, it fixed it.  But everytime he puts the USB in it happens again.

doesn't make sense. with no power to the machine ( unplug from wall-push power (start) button to drain power ) reset cmos.......... read booklet that came with your board. move jumper then move jumper to original position. boot machine while continually tapping the del button until you hit BIOS........ ( maybe F2 on some of these new BIOS' ) not sure.......... DEL always worked for me. Then you can seek out the problem (usb) (fast chage or whatever that stuff is ) (for your phone ) don't know why they add such stupid stuff to motherboards.

pull the usb stick from machine until you get the BIOS set right.

What do you mean buy "move jumper then move jumper to original position"

did you read the booklet on how to reset cmos? there's a jumper block that opens and shorts two pins on the motherboard. that's how you reset the cmos the right way. you CAN pull and replace the battery after a short time..... put it back in the way it comes out. don't forget to check that the time is set correctly also.

moving the jumper is another way of resetting the bios. MSI supports on board super charger usb ports which produces more power than a regular usb port. Disable the super charger portion of it. Than try it again. If it dont work. put the win 8 installation on a DVD disc set your bios to boot dvd rom first, install windows that way
