try plugging the non working computer into the outlet that the working computer is plugged into. aswell as unplugging the PSU cable from the PSU and the mobo cable. if that fails try taking the PSU from the working computer and putting it in the non working computer. if it boots with that then the PSU was killed

its a very basic cheap surge protector btw

OK, those might not work well enough. My brother (electrician) told me that the thingies that you plug into the wall socket doesn't do much unless you have proper over current protection in your fuse box. Those which you plug into the wall are good for finer protection, but if a lightning strikes, they might not be.

I don't know exactely why this is, but that was what I was told

it is on the same line, i.e. the extension lead and it wasn't a lightning strike but i will try a different psu when I get home

From what I've heard, consumer grade UPSs don't actually provide much protection. Only the incredibly expensive server grade ones actually will provide any real protection.

Well if your power goes out you will have 5 minutes to shut down your pc that could save you a new hdd and all your family photos if you dont back up

Shutting your PC down suddenly can damage hard drives? I know sudden failures can corrupt and lose data, but they can't damage hardware, to my knowledge.

yes.. I can't tell you how many times I unknowingly corrupted ext and int hard drives and ssd's by unplugging them from power (or doing a cord-pull) until I realized it much later.
