What was the Steam gem glitch?

I'm just curious, how did people glitch it? What we they doing to get tons of gems?  The original reddit page was removed. Not like it is big deal now seeing how they "fixed" it.

It's just shitty users being shitty.

 

Hell, I'm surprised that Valve still tries...it seems like every time Valve tries to come up with a community-centered event, it ends up breaking and/or exploited by users.

I don't know, all i know that there was too much gems flooded in the market and Valve had to shut down the event for a while to make everything back to normal.

At one point, a sack of gems costed 3 cents in the market.
