PCIE lane usage

Go to solution Solved by SeanBond,

So, I was just wondering. If you run 2 graphics cards off of a single motherboard, but not in SLI or crossfire, do the PCI-E lanes still get cut down like they do if you are running in SLI? Specifically on the Z97 motherboards. Not sure if that matters.

Yes they will get cut but it does not remotely matter. PCI is way too fast for it to bottleneck a graphics card even in 8x mode.

I thought so. Wouldn't it go by usage or is it just an automatic splitting of the available lanes between the 2 gpu's?

I believe so. My board is actually hard wired for 16x/8x/4x (if you were to look in my slots you would see what I mean).

Even if you are folding or something on one of the cards?

I know what you mean. I've seen boards like that on newegg.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I just suddenly thought about it and couldn't find anything about it on google, specifically if they aren't in SLI or Xfire
