Hi guys. I got a 'old' computer system from a friend for a slab of beer (yes i'm Australian) and I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on how the specs hold up, especially the CPU, for modern gaming (Dragon Age Inquisition) etc are and whether this should be sold for parts or is a worthwhile investment?

CPU: AMD FX 8120

Motherboard: ASUS 990FX Sabretooth

CPU Cooler: CM Hyper 212+

RAM: 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws (X)? 1600Mhz

PSU: Gigabyte Odin Pro 800w

Case: Fractal Design XL

There is no graphics card, but I was wondering peoples thoughts if it is a worthwhile investment to drop $300 - $400 on a R9 290 or R9 290X to make this a  backup/family/e-peen rig or if it will inevitably be a crippled platform? See my profile for my current rig as a point of reference.

Cheers.

in comparision to your i5 2500K

the FX8120 is really much slower even if the FX has 8 cores

i think you better off selling the system as a whole

Honestly the highest I would go with that CPU is maybe a 280(x), and that's with overclocking the CPU.

The 8120 was barely an upgrade over Phenom II in games and generally Phenom II's at stock are a pretty big bottleneck for higher end cards.

That being said, it'll still perform admirably, but definitely not compared to current gen i5's or even 8350's.

Get a smaller graphics card and you have a nice backup system or a system for your family. I'd get a new graphics card and keep the computer.

When you say 'smaller' are you talking R9 280(X) @Fate suggested? or R9 270(X)/ GTX 750Ti levels?

So even a substantial OC would not bring the CPU up to spec? I have an Antec 620 Water Cooler around here somewhere to replace the CM 212+ if I decide to follow through.

It is a decent system when all the cores are being used,

Putting in a R9  290 is a llittle overkill, Putting a R9 280 should be enough.

DragonAge Inquisition should run at 30+fps at  Ultra Graphics MSAAx2 on a R9 280,
If it doesnt run at 30 fps you should lower the Shadows to medium, It would still look Great.

Or if funds will allow have a look over the holiday period for a deal 8320 as it's the same as the 8350, your board should support it with a bios flash and couple that to a high end card. Through your water cooler on and with even a conservative overclock you  have a good performing system for a small outlay.I would rather buy a higher end card as it will stay current for longer and you would be more lightly to use it in a future build.

I might be mistaken but isn't it compatible with Vishera Cpus? if so I'd try to upgrade it to an fx 83XX cpu and OC that for best results and graphics card wise I'd say get a R9 285
