Headphones for my brother, under $50

alby800

So for Christmas I have decided to get my little brother (11) some heaphones, he does't need the best sound in the world, as long as it isn't AWFUL and is comfortable.

Requirements:

  • Either over-ear or in-ear
  • Under $50 AUD
  • I am willing to buy from amazon if they ship to Aus and shipping/conversion rate isn't too high :)
  • Doesn't need a mic but it would be a bonus for him to stop using the crappy mic in the webcam
  • he is using it for gaming, and some youtube listening.

Ideas so far:

Cheap panasonic IEMS:

Corsair Raptor HS30:

Sennheiser HD 201s:

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=116_998&products_id=18351

Steelseries 3HV2, these are a bit over budget but I am willing to stretch if the difference is that much:

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=116_998&products_id=26170

Kingston KK-200 (these only come free in a bundle with kingston ssds and that would give me an excuse to get another ssd) :P

Thanks in advance :D

The HD201s are nice, but I've found that they need a bit more power to run then a typical set of headphones. They're also relatively flat sounding, which may be good or bad depending on what sort of sound signature your brother likes.

Edit - I should also mention that the cable is pretty long, almost 3 meters I believe.

Sennheiser or Steel series, heard the Corsair's are shit, except the Corsair 1500+2100's are good

EDIT: suck's he doesn't have close to $100...then you could get the Hyper X cloud's or 1500 by Corsair.

Thanks, I will take that into consideration, do you think that his ipad mini could drive them?

I have the Sennheiser HD202 and I prefer them above the 201. The disadvantage of the 202 and 201 is the long cable (3m).

ok thanks, I will see if I can get the HD202s anywhere here

Probably, He may just have to turn the volume up a bit, maybe add some EQ as well.

BitFenix Flo: removable mic, snappy non-muddy bass unlike virtually everything else in that segment, three types of included cables and looks good enough to show off. And the finish is really nice. Just make sure you educate him on not scuffing it up against tables and such, the rubberized finish may peel if abused.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

50AUD is like $42. Not many stuffs that sound good in that price range. Better go for Superlux, they're good while being cheap.

Yeah I know, but I i don't have much money and he needs a new pair. I am not sure if I can get superlux here, I already know they don't ship from amazon. I will look to see if there are any on ebey or something.

Found these. What do you think? Could his iPad mini drive them for YouTube?

Superlux isn't hard to drive. Even HD650 can be driven by ipad, ipad3 that is.

Unfortunately no, they aren't available :(

But the Superlux 681s are and they are very similar so I will get them. Besides, I really want to try some open headphones too :P

As far as open headphones go, the superluxes (681 and 668, tried both) are not very open. Perhaps just semi-open. See how much Audio Technica TAD300's price there. It got a good openly sound with decent quality.

Ok I will later. I don't think it matters that much if it is not very open, in fact that might be a good thing
