I don't understand what's going on. I have a 5820k, Asus X99-S mbd with 16GB 2400mhz RAM.

According to the BIOS and the auto overclock feature, the CPU is running at 4125mhz.

So why is Core Temp in Windows showing a speed that is bouncing around 1500mhz-2000mhz (sometimes jumping close to 3000). CPU-Z is the same, although it seems more steady at 1500, but then once every now and again will jump up to 4129!

What intel is going on here!? [see what I did there lol]

I'm admittedly a newb to overclocking so I'm very confused.

Sounds like C1E, or Intel Speedstep is on, its a power saving feature that downclocks the CPU when its idle but ramps it up according to a certain amount of load it may experience. About 30% load and up is enough to ramp the CPU clock back to the overclock

System: Intel Core i3 3240 @ 3.4GHz, EVGA GTX 960 SSC 2GB ACX 2.0, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Kingston HyperX RAM, ASRock B75M-DGS R2.0 Motherboard, Corsair CX430 W Power Supply

Ah OK, that explains it then. I thought something was wrong lol! So is that a good or bad thing? Should I turn it off or does it make sense to leave that running for optimal efficiency?

Propably because of the energy save options (C states etc etc) from bios. Try deactivate them and do a stability test to be sure is it safe :-) I think bios always pushing the pedal to the medal for stability reasons. Mine 4690k always hit 4.3 on bios but only hit 4.3 on 100% use in the OS (All power savings are on)

You can leave it on, shouldnt cause any problems to an auto overclock
