You can always download vlc to allow you to watch mkv files, or download a codec which allows all players to play them. Otherwise, I do not believe there is a player.

I wanna play videos on my phone!

download handbrake, i believe it can.

Alright gonna try!

I'd suggest using FormatFactory, it has not only video coversion options but music, images and a lot more. As for handbrake i'm not sure how it is now, but it has never worked properly for me, I found Formatfactory to be easier to use.

The first question should be. Is the container the problem or maybe the codec?

Not too sure :( but my phone plays mp4 files flawlessly

Its probably the codec than but you can write it into a mp4 container within seconds and look if it plays.

Just download Avidemux, open your video, choose mp4 in the drop down menu, save the file.

Now it writes the video into the mp4 container without reencoding and quality loss.

You'll loose the subtitles since mp4 doesn't support subtitles.

Oh boy. You've posted at the right time, as I'm online to answer this question. (although it's been quite some time since converting videos)

The reason I say this is because ever since our 2004 P4 with HyperThreading, I have been collecting and curating media conversion utilities, both free and paid.

I can faithfully say that there are hundreds if not thousands of suites that all look slightly different, yet cost in the $20-60 range.

Don't get me wrong - they can and indeed do work. The reason I don't usually recommend them however is due to not supporting that one file format that happens to come from your uncle's cousin's brother's media hounds from the Bulletin Board days of the net. (if these days were before your time, just think filesharing over dial-up)

The tools I've settled on range from free open source software (FOSS) to more professional solutions like DVDFab.

Hey i wanna ask is there any MKV to mp4 converter that works offline? Thanks for the help! :)

But the video lags like crap on my phone (samsung s3) D:

Could you download and install MediaInfo and report back to me a text copy of what it tells you for the particular file you need to convert?

It would help clear up reasons why it's lagging on your phone, even through VLC. If it's too big a file or the bitrate is too much for the Galaxy S3.

Also, I'd recommend keeping it an MKV file even if you have to downsample the bitrate in order to keep the subtitles. As @.spider. stated, containers like MP4 and AVI don't natively support subtitles.

If you want to go straight ahead and try converting it, I'd suggest a program called DVDFab Video Converter. Yes, it costs money. No it's not cheap if buying the full suite.

And yes, the free option I would recommend is Handbrake like @officiallyasimulator suggested, as long as you've got the patience to learn. We're here to help too, of course.

The reason I recommend DVDFab is simplicity: The interface is easy to use, I've never in my 8 years using it had it reject a filetype, even when the file appears corrupt in a media player, and it's fast supporting Intel's QuickSync, nVidia's CUDA, and I believe (but am not certain) AMD's cards for hardware acceleration.

Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

How? :o

I hope I haven't forgotten something

-open-gop is optional can cause problems; probably not

-You may want to use constant quality values between 20-25

-Select the FDK AAC codec
