Need help finding new headphones.

Go to solution Solved by Jack H,

Hd518's represent a great open headphone in your budget. Dont really need a sound card to run them unless your onboard is broken.

HD558's would also be good. They have improved comfort over the 518, and a slightly different sound. It has good positional audio (kind of similar to surround, but not from software), and would not need an amp unless you have a serious problem with your onboard sound.

Hi. I need to get a new pair of headphones for gaming. I am debating between the Hyperx Clouds and a pair of normal headphones and a sound card. I already have a snowball, so a microphone is not a problem. I would prefer if the sound card is surround sound. My budget is around 100-120. Also, should I get an amp for the Headphones I choose. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a few questions. Are they over ear and comfortable? I'd prefer over ear. Is there a benefit of open ear over closed ear? And finally, would the Hd518's benefit from an amp? Is there one that you can recommend or one that is surround sound?

In order, yes, yes, yes open is better for gaming, not really, surround sound is more or less pointless.

Eh, fit and comfort is subjective, I found all of the 4 and 5 series to all fit the same. And I found all the 5 series to sound the same, which makes buying the lowest end/cheapest the best argument.

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to get the hd558's. I'll probably get a cheap amplifier so i can control the volume.
