Hey im in the market to build another beast. I'm wondering which cpu can last me about 3 years + without the need to upgrade for awhile. I play counter strike, team fortress, and other free steam games, and some mmo. I also will like to start learning video editing, and graphic design. I'll edit pics using gimp or cs2 photoshop. My budget is probably 250 or bit over for cpu. And probably get a middle grade gpu as i dont play high end games much. I dont like overclocking, and will a i3 be good?

An i3 would be good, an i5 would be better

i5 4690k or a Xeon 1231v3 would be MUCH better for rendering, but games like TF2/CSGO/other MMOs will run on a potato.... so

Run of the mill i5 is perfect balance for every task. 4690K is the best out of those, but also needs expensive mobo and a cooler to take advantage of it. Most money efficient is i5 4460 and h81 mobo or something like that.

Just because games are using more cores/threads, doesn't mean they are benefiting from it.

If you're against OC and want a CPU to last you 3+ years, look into a locked i5.

I could definitely recommend the i5-4690k for the price! I love it, its a great, powerful processor without overclocking, or if you just moderately overclock it in applying a XMP profile (mine is OCed to 3.9Ghz and it was done automatically), its a good processor for the price. If you are willing to spend the extra buck, the i7-4790k provides 4 cores and 8 threads versus the 4 cores and 4 threads of the i5. For video editing, graphic design, and photo editing, the i7 would be a better bet if you feel it is worth the money. Personally, I decided to go for the i5 and put the extra $50 into a professional grade motherboard (probably a stupid idea) but I'm pleased with it. Aside from that, I plan to keep my i5 for roughly 3 more years and I think its power level will still be sufficient 3 years from now. I do feel that at this price range, Intel does take the trophy with the i5-4690k over AMD competitors although some may argue otherwise.

Basically, i5-4690 or i5-4690k (the overclockable variant) are great options and I would go with the "k" model just for the future possibility of overclocking. If you do however feel it is worth the extra money, the i7-4790k is also a good option and would likely be better in the future for video editing, graphic design, and photo editing!

Hope its helpful!

Im scared to overclock, and z97 boards are kind of expensive. The 4690k also got 10 bucks more expensive

You can find a decently priced z97 board if you look (don't have any examples on the top of my head). I was also very scared to overclock at first; however when I applied the XMP profile for my RAM (required to run the ram at 2400mhz), my motherboard automatically overclocked my processor very moderately. You don't even have to overclock if you don't want to. I didn't plan to. However, I wanted to leave the option in the future if I felt more comfortable OCing. If is ultimately your choice, but I feel that z97 is the best bet for basic photo and video editing on a budget.

Would a xeon be overkill? Its not much more from a i5

I think you're better off getting over your fear of overclocking and buying an unlocked i5.  Overclocking is not dangerous if done properly and it will net you the biggest performance gains, especially in MMOs.

A locked i5 will be fine, Xeon is overkill.

Agreed, Please don't buy a xeon.... plez.... an i5-4690 is great, and the "k" version gives you future options to boost your performance with OCing!

it depends in what. In gaming, yes. In rendering, no. A Xeon 1231 v3 is a locked i7 with no integrated graphics.

No for some functions, yes for others. An i5 is truly all you need. A xeon at this point would be a waste of money, especially if you are worried about the cost of z97.

A xeon can run on an h81 board.

Of course.  Games prefer stronger cores rather than many hyperthreaded cores.  Especially CPU bound titles like MMOs, having higher clock speeds will greatly improve performance, especially in raids.

A Xeon is more for productivity, and it sounds like productivity is secondary on your list.  A far second to gaming.  Also, I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think those programs you listed are incredibly multithreaded.  Also, its not like an i5 can't do content creation.  It still does it very well.

Yes, a Noctua u9B will keep it cool.

There are cheap Z97 motherboards out there.  You have to ask yourself do you want SLI/Xfire capabilities or not?

MSI Z97 PC Mate - $90:  This one is usually $70, not sure why its $90 all of a sudden.

MSI Z97 SLI Krait Edition - $110 Beautiful motherboard, usually $125, so its currently on sale.

Also, if you live near a Microcenter, buy your motherboard and processor in-store.

The cheap z97 you listed dont have xfire/sli support right?

Edit: i think i might get the krait and get a h440
