Hi

I currently have a 1 TB HDD and I'm thinking about getting an SSD for my boot drive, but will I have to reinstall Windows? I'm sure there's a simple answer but I lack knowledge about software.

Hello. Here are some words.

FX-8150, GTX 670, ASRock 990Fx Extreme4, 8Gb Patriot RAM, 1TB boot and Storage, Windows 7 64Bit

Generally, SSDs come with cloning software you can use if it's coming retail.

I prefer just doing a clean install of the OS.

Any OS, especially Windows, just gets "full" overtime (at least in my case), so a clean install never really hurts.

Besides, i don't entirely see how you can clone a 1TB drive to something like a 256GB SSD.

Another thought i have is that you will probably have to mess around in the register to enable TRIM, where a clean installation just does that automatically when enabling AHCI.

From my point of view, the user experience will just be a lot nicer on a new SSD, with a clean and fast Windows environment  :D .

And if you reeeaaaally want to clone it after all this, i think Acronis offers a solution to this  :P .

I believe that piece of software allows you to make entire backups in the form of disk images, although i have never used it myself.
