hey

i was wondering of i can put 2 USB Flash drives in raid 0

i have a minecraft server running on my hdd but i don't want to have my hdd running for 24/7

i have tried to run it on 1 usb drive but it was to slow so maybe if i can get them to work in raid 0 it will be fast enough?

Your HDD is running 24/7 whether you have a server on it or not.

The only thing that stops your HDD is turning the PC off.

Nah... just keep using your HDD.

Two USB 3.0 drives could maybe speed it up, but the introduction of RAID 0 brings in reliability issues.

Also the flash in your USB dongle might not be made for that many write cycles.

A MUCH better idea would be to get a small SSD instead and use it, or even better upgrade your build with an SSD for your system drive.

120/250GB SSDs have become very cheap lately and would at the same time be a great upgrade for your system.

Well, unless your sever writes double digit GB's everyday to it. But if its just a small Minecraft server you're going to be perfectly fine.

SSD's only really wear out with writes and doesn't take the same wear when reading as HDD's does.

Ok first, is this the same HDD your OS is on? Does your computer only have one HDD?

If so, what you are hearing is search noise. If the HDD turned itself off your windows would crash. So no, it is not turning off.

So the noise you are hearing means your HDD is dying and you should replace it asap. HDDs should not be making noise that loud.

And yes an SSD is more than enough for a minecraft server.

i am afraid that i ruin my ssd if i run the server on it :/

Oh you should just run it on the SSD.

It will be much faster, and it will not ruin it at all.

I've had MC servers on my SSD for the past 4 years 24/7 with no issues.

You won't just damage an SSD. It wears by writing, but even with TLC flash have some people been writing over a PB, you wont hurt your SSD with a small Minecraft server.
