Best specs for $3000

Go to solution Solved by Dim,

So would any of you be willing to give me a full specs list

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage IV Formula

CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K

Power Supply: Corsair AX1200i

GPU: Titan x2

Storage: 4 x 3TB Seagate Barracudas in RAID10

SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB

RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1600

I can't really give prices on these since I live in Australia, but that's a general outline. I would not follow that to the letter, and I would search for better options where possible (such as a cheaper power supply with similar reliability and wattage).

What are the best specs possible for $3000 I will be using this for gaming and video editing so I would like for it to be based on X79 (socket 2011).

        Things I don't need

  • Case
  • Operating System
  • Peripherals
  • Cooling
  • Storage
  • Monitors

What Case have you got?

What Monitor's have you got?

Storage?

Cooling?

All will determine what parts we pick.

Akula  | Dimastech Test Bench | Watercooled | Tri GTX 680's | Build of the Week

Mercury | Caselabs Mercury S3 | Watercooled | GTX Titan | Build of the Week

Armada | Define R4 Titanium | Watercooled | EK Waterblocks | Newest Buildlog

Idk with $3000 I would probably recommend 2011 if your really going to be doing alot of editing. If mostly gaming then yah probably ivy bridge-e.

32gig kit :300$

asus rog mobo 2011 :450$

3970x :1050$

psu :150$

gpu :1050$ (titan) or buy a 3930k for 500$ so you can get a 1550$gpu (dual-triple 780s possibly)

also you should wait for the next gen tho

Pretty poor advice really..

I'll decide those later as I want a caselabs thing with a full water cooling loop the specs of which I will decide later.

You can't decide the monitors later - it's imperative in deciding the appropriate graphics card.

In essence though, sticking to reasonable price to performance components, you would be looking at a 3930K with a Samsung 840 Pro (or two), as well as four drives in RAID, with sizes depending on your storage needs.

If you want to play games in a 7680 x 1600 resolution, you'd be wanting two Titans. If you want to play on one monitor only, two GTX 780s would be exceptional for a 2560 x 1600 or 2560 x 1440 display.

In that case I will probably want 3x 1080p and eventually 1x 4K

In that case, two 780s should be sufficient along with a 3930K.

I wouldn't bother with a Titan at that point, since you aren't asking for a huge upgrade, and Titans generally don't give significant improvement over 780s at 5760 x 1080.

Motherboard: Any compatible LGA 2011 X79 motherboard will be fine - I usually consider motherboards to be personal preference beyond them having heatsinks and fans on them. But at that budget, maybe a Rampage IV Extreme?

Consider a sound card also, if you care about sound - head over to the Audio forum and they will have a good insight at your budget.

I wouldn't go past a 3930K for a workstation. That is to say, I wouldn't bother with a 3970X. However, if you want the prestige and slight performance improvement that is your prerogative - just don't expect the performance to scale with the cost.

For workstation environments, you are better off with a titan because of Titan's GK110 architecture's workstation optimization that are not on 780's GK110

This is correct, sorry I overlooked this.

Two Titans may be pushing your budget, though, and one may not be enough for all games at 5760 x 1080.
