Hi Linus Community. I've been following this forum for quite a while and I've decided to create an account as I need a bit of help here  :P

Anyway, moving on to the build, I want to build a rig that is able to run those demanding ubisoft games and also able to run reasonably quiet.

These are the parts I've considered so far:

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($285.00 @ CPL Online)
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61 106.1 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($158.00 @ IJK)
Memory: Kingston Beast 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($199.00 @ CPL Online)
Storage: Intel 730 Series 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($155.00 @ Centre Com)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 4GB WINDFORCE Video Card  ($519.00 @ CPL Online)
Case: NZXT H440 (White/Black) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($145.50 @ Centre Com)
Total: $1650.50
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

As you may have noticed now, there is no motherboard on the build. I am having trouble choosing a motherboard suited for the build.

I really like Asus motherboards except for the maximus series due to the colour. Any recommendation on which Asus z97 ATX motherboard I should get?

I also chose the 750W PSU as I may want to expand the system in the future like hdd and GPU.

Lastly, does i7 and gtx980 worth the pricetag?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated  :D

Welcome to the forum :)

I would recommend getting an EVGA G2 750W PSU instead, and any asus Z97 motherboard depending on your budget and aesthetic preferences.

The rest of the build looks great. 4790k and 980 would not be worth it at this price point.

plz no corsair RM, why??? because they use cheap chinese and taiwanese capacitors

go for Rosewill capstone, Seasonig G series or EVGA supernova G2, they should all have 750w versions, they they have 100% japanese caps

dont you want mass storage?

other than that it looks good

and welcome to the forum, hope you have fun :)

why an asus board? no that they are bad, but do you want that brand specifically???

what color board are you looking for?

Why not go with a Crucial MX100 256GB SSD instead of the Intel 730?  It's a lot less expensive and performs around the same.  You could then add a WD Blue if you want or save the money for a better HDD down the road.

The Asus Z97-A seems like a great mobo that I recently put into a friends build along with a 4690k.

No, 980 and i7 is not worth it IMO if you are just gaming.

MY CURRENT PC

PERIPHERALS - KEYBOARD: Corsair Vengeance K70 w/ Cherry MX Browns MOUSE: Logitech G500/M100 MONITOR(S): Acer H236HLbid (I want an Asus PB278Q) SPEAKERS: Some Cyber Acoustics $10 speakers PICTURES AND FULL PARTS LIST @ PCPARTPICKER - http://pcpartpicker.com/b/z4Pscf

if its just for gaming go i5-4690k and unless you just want the bling factor i wouldnt go GTX 980 i would instead go for GTX 970 since its around $150-200 cheaper and in SLI out performs the 980 by about 1.5x

Also if this is just a gaming machine there is no point in having 16gb of ram you could save a lot of money and just go with a 2x4gig kit and it would perform the same for gaming.

bought a rosewell psu and has horrible coilwhine so i really dont like the brand even though every likes them but still, every company has a drawl back and its all luck

any reason for the x61? to me its 50$ more then whats needed

going 4k soon or multi screens? 970 is a good card for 1080, slight overkill but gives a 'slight futureproof' you could say.

i7 is not needed for gaming 'yet' my i5 rarely hits 100%

240gig SSD will fill up fast. very fast. youll need a HDD as deleting and installing on a SSD isnt the best thing to do

a rosewill psu will still be higher quality than the corsair RM

you can say that about any brand, my cosair 430m worked fine and i might replace my rosewell for it due to the coil whine, but its still a luck of the drawl with if youll get a quality one or not.

Thanks for the advice. I don't really want mass storage as I won't be gaming that many games at one time.

I want an asus board cause they are really pleasing aesthetically.

I really like the asus sabertooth z97 mark 1 as I find it very good looking  :P but the pricetag is a little steep :(

Once again thanks for the advice guys. Really appreciate them.

Here ya go I made a few changes which brought the price down considerably and added a 1tb mass storage drive and a mother board and its only a tad bit more expensive than what you had previously

Thanks again for the advice.

Will this cpu and gpu last a few years? As I am afraid that upgrading can be costly.

Oh yea people are still on their predecessors from 2-4 years ago so i can easily say these will last 4 years easy as long as you maintain your system properly

And upgrading isnt as bad as you would think since you can usually just go one to two parts at a time

like say when its time to upgrade your cpu you will have to upgrade your cpu and mobo at the same time but you can reuse all your other components or when its time to upgrade gpu just pull the old one out and put the new one in and people are always wanting older components so as long as you maintain them well you should be able to sell them when your done.

Sweet.

Should I add liquid cooling via NZXT kraken g10 to liquid cool my gpu? As I want to maximise the lifetime of pretty much everything and also to get a quieter system.

I wouldnt worry about it to be honest unless your planning to do some heavy over clocking what you have on there already seems good enough just make sure you watch your temps you dont want them going to high most people say 75-80 degrees celsius is a good max temp to shoot for

Nevermind what you have on there already should be more than sufficient its a 240mm radiator on that cooler its good enough for a more drastic overclock

Also im not to familiar with the case that you have on your build but if you want the best of the best when it comes to keeping your system with plenty of air flow and quiet take a look at this its just a little bit more expensive than what you currently have by .50 lol but I believe its really good and reliable.
