I have an Intel Core i5 4690k and an ASUS ROG Maximus VI Hero and I need to pick a GPU, I have a budget of $300-500.

R9 290/290x and the GTX 970 should be the cards you look at and then get the one you like the look of the most. That's how I choose my cards.

A 970 would be you're best bet.

 

If you need more power (1440p<) Then go for a 980.

I would say go for a GTX 970, if you really wanted to you could also purchase another in the future for SLI. The benchmarks for GTX 970 in SLI are great, and perform better than one 980. Though if you didn't want to go for SLI, or just didn't want to spend the extra money, a GTX 980 would do you just fine. Overall, I find the GTX 970 to be just enough for gaming, unless you're going for 1440p on ultra or up. Other than that, the card is a great bang for your buck and performs nicely!
