How much virtual memory?

I have 12 GB of RAM, but I found out that my system only allowed 6.

I only have a hard drive so things get really slow.

Even Windows freezes up.

I noticed in task manager that some programs memory usage drops as low as 0.1.

When I try to load that app, everything gets really slow.

When I googled the problem, I found out that you needed to allow 3 times as much memory.

Is this right?

Please help, this is a new computer.

 

My minimum is 16mb, the recommended is 4597mb and 6400mb is currently allowed.

I run 8gb of RAM and with tons of chrome tabs open I have it set to system managed up to 4gb. never had a hiccp, but I am on a solidstate drive.

Since your system only allows 6GB of RAM, go with 6400MB of Virtual Memory. Either way, with a hard drive, your system will generally be slow. Upgrading to an SSD is your best bet in solving slow performance problems.

I don't think this laptop should be this slow.

I got it from costco it has 12 gb ram 750gb hard drive and i5 processor.

Why is chrome;s memory dropping down to 0.1mb?

I have alot of tabs open, about 10?

Sometimes it goes up to 40%, but all of a sudden disk usage spikes up.

i can hear the hard drive spinning more faster in the laptop.

You should never need more than 2GB *maximum* virtual memory if you have a decent amount of ram and an SSD (large paging files are pointless space wasters)

 

512mb (min) - 2048 (max) This is all you need and that's being generous.

 

If system is new and you only can use 6GB out of 12GB, that's another problem in of itself as that isn't right. If your OS isn't 64bit, you're capped at 4GB. Something about that PC seems off. The SSD bit is only because of space reasons. For reference, my virtual memory is 512mb-2048mb and I have 16GB of ram. Your 12GB isn't that far off to even need to worry about virtual memory over 2GB. Maybe if you had 512mb of ram...
