Hi, I know a little about building custom pc's and have built one before for just an everyday use.

I'd like to get in to 3D animation so I've decided to invest in a new custom rig, however I'd still like to do some gaming on it if the mood strikes.

I've been looking at the ASUS ATX DDR4 3000 (O.C.) Motherboard X99-DELUXE as the motherboard and start off with about 16gb of ddr4 ram.

Ive also been looking at graphics cards that include 4k capability and will prob go with 2 gtx 970.

My question is, are these graphics cards and motherboard a good buy or a pointless buy when working with programs like after effects, photoshop and cinema 4d?

Should I consider investing in a smaller pc option for the rendering?

I am only new to 3D and I don't do it professionally so any advice is welcome.

X99 motherboards aren't worth it since your new. I'd recommend a Z97 with a 4690k, or a 4790k. But i personally think that the Xeon E3 1230 V3 with a B85, H97 will suit your needs.

Also DDR4 is still new, and way too overpriced, i'd stick to DDR3 about 2133 Mhz clock speed. But you'll benefit from 16 GB of RAM.

Edited: 2x 970 in SLI is pretty good. Also some programs benefit from the GPU boosting, so it depends, but I believe Adobe programs benefit for it. Someone will have to correct me if i'm wrong.

Also what is your budget? This allows me to help you by a long run. How often do you edit?

Thanks for the reply. I have a budget of about $2500. I was going to take my hdd and ssd's from my old rig so I don't have to include them in the price.

I had thought about the ddr3 ram MB's but thought that I may benefit from DDR4 but like I said I am no expert when it come to building.

I have only recently started toying with 3D editing but want to get into it a bit more, just as a hobby first and see where it goes.

I know there are nvidia graphics cards specifically for 3d editing but would rather have a graphics card that can also run games .

How often do you edit? Since you have a high budget, i guess you could benefit from ddr4, and x99 build. Do you want to overclock?

Edit: Do you make money off it. Or its just for college or for fun?

Nope, don't make any money. Just want to start it as a hobby and see how it goes.

How often do you game? Could you list me all the things you'll be doing in your pc? I also recommend you take a look at the Xeon E3 1230/1 V3. Those are basically a 4770 that is locked and has a disabled iGPU

I used to game more than I do now because my graphics card is a gtx260 so doesn't play the most modern games but I want a pc that can handle both gaming and editing now.it doesn't have to be super fast but still would like the option of over clocking in the future

Since you said you had a SSD, and HDD I didn't include it in. And i'm 'assuming' you have a copy of Windows as well. I'll have to let @i_build_nanosuits

or @Faceman see if its good enough. (Sorry for dragging you guys into this)

You have a massive budget, so don't rule anything out.  I think you need to do more research on what those programs depend on.  I know more about gaming, and less about content creation.  If this is just a hobby, an i7-4790k is still plenty strong to rip through anything you throw at it.  You do have the budget to go X99 if you want, but it might be overkill for what your do.

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hyycmG
Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/hyycmG/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($299.98 @ NCIX US)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  ($109.91 @ Amazon) <-- Best mix of performance and silence from an AIO
Motherboard: Asus Z97-AR ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($127.27 @ TigerDirect) <-- Excellent motherboard with good features and aesthetics, own it myself, highly recommended.
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory  ($174.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB ACX 2.0 Video Card  ($548.85 @ Amazon) <-- You have the budget, go for the 980. You could also look into an R9 295X2.  Its come down in price considerably and is the best 4k card out right now.
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe ATX Full Tower Case  ($149.99 @ Amazon) <-- Amazing case.
Power Supply: EVGA 850W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($119.99 @ Newegg) <-- Much better than the RM series
Total: $1530.98
