Heyo everyone!

I think I have a problem with my rig;

At STOCK speed, my CPU idles at 45-55C with CPU-Fans on low. With Prime95 running it runs at 65C with the H100i fans spinning up 70-100% (loud as hell). if I keep the Fanspeed down, I reach around 90C which just doesnt seem right.

OC'd to 4.2GHz @ 1.295V it runs at the exact same temps... veeeeery weird

I've tried turning the fans around, pulling cold air in instead of exhausting hot air from inside the case, but to no avail, which caused me to drop from 50-60C idle to the stated 45-55C.

My rig:

Cooler - Corsair H100i
CPU  - Intel Core i7 3930k

MoBo - MSi BigBang xPower II

GFX Card - GTX660Ti (29-31C at idle)

PSU - Corsair HX850

Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause the problem

Any help/suggestion is much appretiated!

1# double check the thermal compound, thinner is better, but enough is essential (its a fine line in my eye), try it a few times various ways and see which gets the biggest but thinnest spread, sometimes i do the usual center spot with a grain of rice, sometimes i do a VERY thin x but you have to be careful not to do it in a whay that could create an air bubble/pocket. centre should work for you, just make sure you give it a fair amount of pressure and a bit of a wiggle (careful not to lift it off even a bit). if you havent guessed already im very perticular about apply thermal paste :D oh and see if you can get some glasses cleaning solution, seems to work great for me, no greasy fingerprints on the cpu!
2# check cpu-z to see if you have an engineering sample (just throwing it out there)
3# core temp or whatever you're using could be out, double checj the Tj max is correct, even then coretemp can be out by 5*c here or there, ive seen boards with stock coolers saying theyre at 38*c on prime 95.......yeah right
4#if having the fans drawing air in improves temps a degree or 2 i would say you need a better case, your internal case temps shouldnt be much higher then the room temp and if anything the last thing you want is a case full of warm air.

upload a screen shot of cpu-z, your temp readings and of your case internals.

Thank you for your replies!

Try cleaning off the thermal paste and applying a different amount. I had the same problem once. Make sure the h100i is nice and tight and making contact with the CPU properly. :)

Hope this helps

Yeah, I already doublechecked mounting and swapped thermal paste and I also noticed that the radiator itself gets warm too (I'm assuming that the rad would run pretty cold if the CPU wouldn't make constant contact thus emitting less heat?)

What temperature is your room at?

27-30C

I changed thermal paste twice already without any luck; there were not changes whatsoever - not cooler nor hotter

I've monitored the temps in 4 different programs lol (HWMonitor, clickbios, CORSAIR Link and coretemp)

I have a question! is your pump working at full speed?, if your pump is plugged into the CPU or SYS_FAN header it should be left "disabled speed control" on the bios, so it runs at MAX all the time.

check that, maybe the water flow is too slow... maybe?

make sure LLC is on auto, you should be fine with 4ghz on stock volts (1.275 give or take)
checked the radiator for damage? are both fans working, i cant think of anything that would make it run that hot, its not bulldozer based is it? :-D

Yeah, when set to disabled it is working at 100% at all times.

If your computer was bought recently, meaning that you have these bad temps from the start, then it may be that the IHS, here is a link of a video on youtube.

I have seen some others doing this to their own CPUs showing before and after temps, with VERY noticeable drops in temps, now im not saying that you SHOULD do this, but if the PC is new you can try contacting the shop where you bought it and ask for a new one, because that one has temps way above average.

just saying.

It most likely has nothing to do with there being too little air flow or fresh air in the case, because I can take the radiator out of the case entirely and still don't get any better results. Hell I've even tried pointing my ventilator onto my case to see if that's gonna work lol

I'm going to buy new thermal paste (been using arctic ceramic after the preapplied thermal pad had to go) and reapply it tomorrow one last time to see if I get better temps. Who knows? Maybe they've accidentally confused Mayonnaise for Thermal Paste and sold that instead :P

I will update you guys as soon as I've bought and tested the new Thermal paste. If that won't work.. well.. keep the ideas comin'!

Anyway, I appreciate your effort and must thank you guys! (:

Dude why are you surprised ? You have a 6 core Intel CPU, they run hot

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlPSGh26Ne0XdHZweHoxckRqazBvM0RTMW5GSFZNRmc#gid=0

This is Linuses tast of Kraken x40 and 60

in short your temps are ok at 27-30 °C, your room is hot just look at the voltage and frequency you are lucky, Linus got 71°C with Noctua fans ( not full blast )

Does the h100 run quiet? Just thinking if you've got air or something in it so its not performing correctly. If you've got sit or turbulence you should be able to hear it gurgle.

That sucks. Nothing worse than high temps. Do you have to run 1.290v? Seems a bit high for your clock is all.

Good luck!

Alright I got some Noctua NT-H1 and applied it today.

After some testing I get 40-45C at idle and 60-65 under load with fans running on low speed.

I guess thermal paste isnt supposed to come off like you'd scratch cement off of a metal surface after all!

I think around 40-45C seems about right for a  3930k as it's a 6-core after all.

Now for fine tuning this thing (:

Again, thank you for your time and advice guys!
