Hey guys,

I am going to be studying engineering in september next year and I am going to be taking a PC to uni purely because engineering being very maths means I can't make notes on a laptop. I have a budget of £1000 but I don't mind spending a bit more. So far I'm not sure whether I want an entry level quadro or a gtx 970. For the rest of the build I have chosen an i7-4770K (cooled by a Corsair H100i) on an Asus Z97-PRO with 16GB of Corsair Venegence 1600MHz RAM with a Samsung 840 EVO SSD (120GB) and a WD Caviar Blue (1TB), powered by Corsair RM850 in a Fractal Design Define R4. Please tell me your suggestions and why.

Thanks

Get a 4790k instead of 4770k, the 4790k has improved TIM for better temperatures and much higher stock clock speeds

Get EVGA G2 750W (Can handle 3-way SLI 970 which is max for 970), it's the best PSU you can get right now at that wattage after the AX860/760 (which are overpriced)

Get G.SKILL Ripjaws X, Ares or Trident X or Ripjaws Z. Corsair vengeance is pretty overpriced 99% of the time

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Is 1000 your total budget? Or for the GPU...

This seems like an overkill build, and I like it. Have you purchased anything yet?

I can recommend a GTX 970, then SLI if needed.

Thanks a lot for reponse Archangel, pcpartpicker shows the Vengence to be cheaper than the G-Skills, but I'll keep it in mind if there are any price changes. I have a £100 budget overall.

Man, 100 isn't going to get you far :)

Anyways, post a pcpartpicker.com link of all the parts you want.

Cool beans, what course are you taking?

For an engineering student, time is the most important thing you have. That means you need fast boots, and a good work environment. I would recommend a bigger SSD, and a smaller power supply. Say like an EVGA G2 750w. The processor is a bit overkill though, a step down to the i5 wouldn't hurt.

The best investment for you though, would be 2 monitors side by side, your productivity rate would be so much improved.

Edit: there's no improvement with Z97 if you're going to buy an early Haswell. You could save some money with an equivalent Z87 board.

While a powerful PC might help, the best productivity hardware you can buy are.... the monitorS. Get two or more monitors and you won't regret it.
By the way why do you need a powerful GPU? So far i haven't use any program that requires a good GPU.

I will be doing mechanical engineering. I agree with you guys on the power supply and I will go for the G2. I'm thinking that if I get a bigger SSD I would need a smaller HDD so would a 250GB SSD and HDD sound sufficient? Lastly, anymore opinions on the GPU

if you can build your rig for 1k thats great.  thats a really really solid build.  4790k for your cpu,  but everything else is good to go.   dont get the i5 if you dont have to, the i7 will give you a little more room to grow.

remember it takes 2 seconds to google it yourself......

my rig (close anyway, couldnt find my qnix 1440p moniter or my msi z77 g45a matx mobo)   http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LzzqwP
