Question!

Go to solution Solved by Spev,

Alright guys I will mark thread as solved. I'll figure it out when the time comes I just wanted to make sure it was possible. Thanks!

Ok so here's the deal. I'm planning on upgrading my currently PC, I'm replacing the HDD, adding an SSD, and a brand new OS. Now, here is my main question: In the future (I will eventually be replacing CPU/mobo/PSU later this year maybe with new CPU line from Intel) I will want to use the same HDD and SSD. I would simply be swapping out the CPU/Mobo for a new one. With regards to Windows license, it's only authorize for one mobo right? So how would this work if I grab a new motherboard and plug it into my HDD and SSD from the old set? Would it boot up correctly? Would I have to purchase a new versions of windows? What will happen? Thanks.

Current PC build: [CPU: Intel i7 8700k] [GPU: GTX 1070 Asus ROG Strix] [Ram: Corsair LPX 32GB 3000MHz] [Mobo: Asus Prime Z370-A] [SSD: Samsung 970 EVO 500GB primary + Samsung 860 Evo 1TB secondary] [PSU: EVGA SuperNova G2 750w 80plus] [Monitors: Dual Dell Ultrasharp U2718Qs, 4k IPS] [Case: Fractal Design R5]

You just do a clean install and you'll be fine.

If it authorized for 1 pc.You will have to reinstall the os once you change the MB because the windows is configuring itself based on the mb and bios. Not sure what are the steps but i know you can take the licence back and use it on the new pc.Or contact microsoft and tell them i am sure they can help. But it should work just fine the old licence will be removed and used on the new machine

What I'm saying is there a way to NOT to a clean install, and just basically swap out components and boot up like I was on my old mobo? Or do I have to do a clean install, and will I need to purchase a new windows license?

Thanks for the tip, i wasn't sure. I can get Windows 8.1 (and maybe W10 will be out by then, hopefully!) for about $60 via student discount. So it's not a huge deal breaker if I have to buy it again, but ofc I would not want to. However, I may still want to use the old hardware in an "old build", so would this matter? I would then be using the same key on both PCs. In that case I would probably need to buy a new license?

If the licence you have in only for 1 pc then you can only use it on 1 pc.As for windows thing above you will have to do a clean install because if you don't it may not work or work but with very huge problems

Please tell me you don't have an oem version because if you do you can't transfer it

Haven't purchase it yet, but it's directly from Microsoft store for the student discount. I highly doubt they are selling the OEM version on their consumer wesbite.

I've been able to transfer my OEM win 7 licence from a Asus AMD build across to a MSI intel build without having to re-validate or buy a new key.

So when you upgrade, rip out the old stuff, chuck in the new, boot up, let windows do its thing, install the drivers, and your off and running.
