Use both 1600 DDR3 Ram and 1866 DDR3 at the same time?

KayTees

Upgrading my CPU and MOBO to a i5-4690K and using the MSI Z97 Krait Edition. http://www.techpowerup.com/img/14-08-13/MSI_Z97_SLI_Krait_Edition_01.jpg

Was wondering if I am able to mix 1600 ram with 1866. Will be using the HyperX Fury. I have the white ones, feel like upgrading to 16GB and getting the black ones to match the slots :P

Not recommended, but the higher speed memory will run at 1600mhz.

It will work, however all of your memory will run at 1600mhz. Also, you might have some issues with the timings with the different RAMs, but most motherboards now can set them automatically to make them work.

You can mix them but your RAM will run at the speeds of the slowest RAM.

Yes, you will be able to use 1600 ddr3 ram at the same time with 1866 ddr3 ram. The 1866 ram will run at 1600 with no issues. Good luck with the build and I want to see pics when it's done :P

You need to make sure the timings of the RAM are the same too or they won't work together.

It is rare, but it is also possible that if the 1600mhz DIMMs have 1 or 2 steps lower CAS latency and runs at 1.35v, you'll be able to instead bring the 1600mhz DIMMs up to an 1866mhz OC at the same CL and 1.5v.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

True, but binning is also common in memory, if the memory could run at a higher speed, it would have been rated @ 1866 instead. While it works, I would keep everything at 1600 to ensure stability.

No, some lower CL memory is actually higher quality flash than higher frequency. Some people shop looking for lower CL prioritized over higher bandwith, and vice versa. It MAY be the case but not always. For example, Crucial Ballistix Tacticals, the 1.35v CL8 1600mhz versions will do even 2133mhz if you're lucky, and pretty much always 1866mhz @CL9.

Higher frequency is needed where files being accessed frequently are big, CL is needed where there are many many smaller files. Hence why if you've got an APU you want higher frequency, but if you're running a Minecraft server or a database accessed by many people you want lower CAS.

The only memory that is usually crap are the ones that "meet in the middle" and aren't prioritized one way or another.
