Hi,

I'm about to get a Haswell upgrade. its been a while since my last upgrade (currently running a Core 2 Duo) so I'd just like to check.

Intel 4770k

Gigabyte z87x-UD3H

2 x Patriot Viper Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (2x8) 1866 Ram

Corsair AX860

From my old system:

Fractal R3 (Upgrading the case later)

2 x Powercolor Radeon 7950

I'm wondering if memory compatibility is a concern with Haswell/z87, and I'd also like to know if I delid & water cool my CPU in the future, would overclocking be superior with a better motherboard such as the Gigabyte z87x-OC?

The memory will work fine. Ivy and haswell memory compatibility is pretty much the same.

Overclocking probably has more to do with the chip than the motherboard. Pretty much any haswell motherboard should be decent at overclocking.

The OC is based off of the UD3H so it's probably a bit better.

Paying more for a better motherboard would allow for better overclocking but only if you don't get a bad overclocking chip in the first place. Haswell tends to be a bit of a gamble for overclockers.

You'll probably hit the thermal limits of the chip before the limits of what your motherboard can do, even with a delid.  Not sure what you're doing on the computer but 32GB of RAM is probably extreme overkill.  And also be aware that amount of memory is not supported by Windows Home Premium.

Thanks for the input. I don't really need that amount of ram, i was thinking of putting 20GB into ram cache or as a ram drive, mostly to reduce game load times.

I probably should point out that I've got a 120GB SSD and 3 hard drives that will be going in it.

My budget is probably $1000-$1300 Australian.

Well with your budget, you could just grab some ssds in raid 0 for game loading and stuff:

SSDs in RAID 0 is sort of pointless unless you have a lot of them...

Doesn't it help with loading games?
