Sketchup - How to get scales correct?

I've made many things in Sketchup, I would even said I was quite skilled with it, but there's only one thing I can NEVER get correct and that is scale. 

I am planning to design a case soon so I NEED to learn how to get scales correct. 

If you have any tips or tricks please let me know! :)

I can assist, if you would like to PM me your Hangout I can walk you through it. I used to design cases, products with Sketch-up, before I learned that CAD was much better to use.
