Hello,

I'm in the process of acquiring the parts for a new PC build (based around a Z97 mobo). I have a question about reusing the Windows 7 Home Premium disks I bought to upgrade from Vista on the current PC. I read somewhere that the Upgrade version was identical to the "New" installation version, except that it asks for the Vista Key during installation (I still have the Vista sticker on the side of the PC). I suppose I will need to buy a new product Key from Microsoft for the installation of Windows 7 on the new PC, or can I use the Key already in the box?

The new PC will use an SDD as the boot drive (with Windows installed on it), while the current HDD will be used for data storage. Can someone suggest how to link the program files on the HDD so they are accessible in the new setup?

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

You can most likely reuse your key. If its branded OEM key, then you could run into problems, but those aren't so common with Vista keys.

Like keeping programs from previous install? For most software that isn't possible if you are going to reinstall windows. If you mean like having some software on SSD and rest on HDD, you can create folders named "Program Files" and "Programs Files (x86)" on HDD and just change letter in install path everytime you install something to HDD.

Just "linking" the existing programs to the new os doesnt work. You could clone the hdd, but a fresh installation is recommended.
