Hey all,
So my friend is building a rig and it's going to be AMD based. Now, I would be of much greater use except that I haven't been up to date on AMD motherboards.

The system will have an FX 8 core (he plans to SLIGHTLY OC) with a Hyper 212 Evo.

2x4Gb Kingston Fury 1866MHz RAM.

Sapphire r9 280 3Gb

120Gb Samsung 840 Evo + 1TB WD blue series

CM 600w 85% efficiency

Now we need help with choosing the right motherboard.
The choice comes down to these two:

Asus http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_R20/overview/

Gigabyte http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4717#ov

Thanks all! :)

I highly suggest you get a 990Fx(its Amd's newest chipset coming with many new/upgraded features) mobo for an 8core 970 ones are notorious for having issues with with the 8cores also I suggest the 8320 if he's gonna OC he should be able to match 8350 speeds or better and save some cash

Is it that big of a difference? Because it's quite an increase in price here, so I'm wondering if it's worth it? :)

the gigabyte board has an 8+2 power phase VRM design...it's a better board for an FX 8 core.

If the purpose of the build is gaming, he should look into a locked i5 + H81 or B85 motherboard. It will end up being less expensive and perform better than an overclocked FX8.

If you're forced to stick with AMD and picking between those two, the Gigabyte is the far superior option because of its 8+2 VRM phase design.

I tried getting him to go with an i5 but AMD just has a lot better pricing here, an i5 would be 60e more and the board would be the same cost. :/

I would swap out the 840 EVO with a MX100 as it might save him a large chunk of money.

The 840 EVO is on a discount so he already ordered it. :)

Even on discount the MX100 base price is around $20 cheaper while providing an extra 6 GB of storage (nothing big). It's enough to go from a Hyper 212 EVO to a Corsair H50.  :P

Our market is very specific, an H50 here is twice the price of an Hyper 212 Evo which is already overpriced. Another problem would be ordering the MX100, as Crucial isn't that well based in Serbia, so you kinda gotta work with what you got. :D

Check our emmi.rs for prices and available gear, they are well stocked and have the best prices right now. :)

This sets you over budget even considering that you don't need an aftermarket cpu cooler for it?

My friend, sets him over budget because he wanted to OC. The CPU he planned to get is 13 000rsd and the board is 8000rsd which is 21 000rsd compared to 26 000rsd. I tried talking him into getting an i5 and a decent board but no use. :/

you should tell him that this kit will be vastly superior in regards to gaming regardless of how high he think he might be able to overclock the FX CPU...unless he can push the FX in the 6ghz area (good luck with that) then this core i5 will run any games better.
