So, with my rig, I was going to have my 7950 be the only GPU in the system. But now I'm considering tossing my 480 in as well (and maybe upgrading it to a 660-680 or 760-770) later on down the line. But why, you may ask?

Well, I was thinking about having it sit there and fold (if I can have it fold while I do something like play a game or just gererally use my rig), and maybe use it for programs that can take advantage of CUDA and all that good stuff. So... Does anyone here do something similar? Also, will my EVGA SuperNOVA 650 watt PSU (the fully modular, 80+ gold sexbomb) handle all of this (assuming there was a 4690K OC'd to a fairly normal speed running full tilt, as well as my 7950 and 480 going balls to the walls)? I haven't gotten to see it yet, so I have no clue on the connectors. I will not be overclocking the graphics cards, btw.

Not too sure. I know you can use nvidia cards as PhysX but I'm not too sure about having different vendors in the same system and having it work. I may be wrong though.

Wasn't the 480 a power whore (as well as a heater)? I.e. not great to run while gaming on a 280/

I was going to do something like that with the 780 that's going to be used in my brother's upcoming build, but I found that it made my primary card run so hot that the fan speed when gaming was unbearably loud..

 

I took the 780 out the very next day after I put it in. I just couldn't stand the extra noise and heat..

(also: PhysX is used in a grand total of two games (yes, two whole games) that I have installed. One of those is CPU bottlenecked due to poor optimization, and the other is so light that it doesn't matter)

A 650W would be just enough to power it if you don't overclock the GPUs, so you'll be fine in my books, a bit close but passable.

It will work, it's just that the graphics power of the two cards can't be combined to run one application/game

You can run different teams in one system. But with the one recent update from Green team, you can't use it as a PhysX card if there is an AMD card of any kind in the system as well.

Yes. Which is why I want to use it for now.

Yes.. It was also the card where they had to put holes in specific spots of the PCB to help with cooling. But here in Michigan, (@tmcclelland455 lives here) you would love to have a heater in the room. Well, I like 30-mid 50F degree weather.

And I have the Engineering Sample, which doesn't have the heatpipes sticking out, so it will probably cool slightly worse.

Just go custom if it is that bad, you will still heat your room up, just the GPU will remain cooler
