I keep running into the warning that old BIOS instalations have incompatibilities with Intel Haswell CPUs. Is this something I should be worried about? If I run into it, how easy is it to fix? Can it be prevented? Help. Becuase I shooting at shadows right now.

You mean Haswell Refresh? It's hard to tell, because boards made (built) after Haswell refresh based on 8-series chipsets will have Haswell Refresh compatible BIOS preinstalled, but if the person/companu/store you buy it from gives you a board that's been on the shelf for a while, then it might not have the refresh compatible BIOS.

Most H81 boards will have the latest BIOS. However in the higher end, better to get H97 and Z97 then H87 or Z87 respectively, if you're getting a Haswell Refresh CPU.

Some Asus motherboards do have a feature called USB BIOS Flashback, which allows you to update BIOS with no CPU at all, so you can easily update to a refresh compatible BIOS, however motherboards without this function, you'll have to find a non-refresh CPU to update the BIOS with before you can use a refresh chip.

Yes, this is something to be worried about. The only fix is to install the new bios, which requires a working CPU. Since your CPU won't work until you have the new bios installed, you're in a catch-22 until you can borrow an older CPU, which for many people is quite difficult. Basically, avoid it unless the motherboard supports CPU-less bios reflashing like some Asus MoBos.

THIS and so if you wnat to buy a haswell part with either a 1 or a 90 at the end then get a 9 series chipset

The combo Im attempting is an Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core and an ASRock Z87 Extreme4 ATX LGA1150.

Just get a Z97 board, just to be 100% sure it will work out of the box. Saves you the trouble of having to get a G1820 to update the BIOS then return it
