Why does WEP still exist?

I just set up a new router for a friend, and I started to question something, why does WEP encryption for WiFi still exist? It's actually set as the default encryption for the router before you set it up, so people who just use it off the name and password on the sticker on the router are using age-old WiFi password technology, and if anything are putting themselves at risk, even though they just bought a new AC router... 

 

Anyone have any insight or two cents on this?

its better to White list the MAC id's of those devices on non secure wifi than use WEP (wep can be cracked in seconds)

And a MAC address can be spoofed instantly.

If you're using something other than WPA2 or some form of RADIUS authentication (or similar) do not expect your network to be secure.

The original Nintendo DS is the only device I can think of that only supports WEP. 

 

Other devices at the time like PSPs and WiFi G cards might not support WPA2 but they do support standard WPA Personal
