I'm new to server's/nas and I was wondering if anyone could help me piece together a build.

Budget - 650-800.

Xenon or i3+ acceptable.

Prefer mini Itx but ATX or micro will suffice.

At least 1 ssd in the build for os.

and minimum of 3 tb of storage.

It may be difficult but I expect great things from you all, Happy building.

4gb + of ram. Doesn't need to be ecc.

I'd add another hard drive so you can do RAID 10 (mirroring and striping). Chose a 80+ gold PSU because of energy efficiency, assuming the PC would be on 24/7.

CPU: Intel i5 4570 | Cooler: Cooler Master TPC 812 | Motherboard: ASUS H87M-PRO | RAM: G.Skill 16GB (4x4GB) @ 1600MHZ | Storage: OCZ ARC 100 480GB, WD Caviar Black 2TB, Caviar Blue 1TB | GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 | ODD: ASUS BC-12D2HT BR Reader | PSU: Cooler Master V650 | Display: LG IPS234 | Keyboard: Logitech G710+ | Mouse: Logitech G602 | Audio: Logitech Z506 & Audio Technica M50X | My machine: https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/b/JoJ

Basically just shy of $800

Motherboard/CPU combo: ASUS P9A-I/C2550/SAS/4L

SSD: A-Data SP900 M.2 128GB M.2-2242 Solid State Drive

HDDs: 2x of: Seagate Barracuda 3TB 3.5" 7200RPM

Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced

RAM: Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600

PSU: Corsair Builder 500W

Why I chose what I did. The Asus motherboard is an has the CPu soldered on the socket. Its pretty efficient at power consumption. Albeit it might be a little overkill. I don't know if you are going to transcode home media. If you do plan on streaming media, then it makes sense to have an efficient 8 core. The SSD is M.2, but saves space on the mounting mechanism in the case.

The RAM is just plain an simple, nothing fancy. Notice the lack of an Optical drive. You should install the OS from USB.

You could also shave $100 off if you don't want RAID 1 by removing a seagate HDD. The motherboard has an integrated raid controller, the only thing you may need to pickup is are some SAS to SATA breakout cables. you can find those here at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816132039&cm_re=minisas_breakout-_-16-132-039-_-Product

Overall this build may be on the high side of your budget, but leaves you with room to grow if you so desire. I also don't know what OS you plan on using. If it is going to be linux based, then you can basically cut the SSD down to 64Gb and save some money. *nix OSs are pretty lightweight on their OS install.

EDIT:

You could swap the SSD for this one and also save about $30: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-rc120akkn1

Basically, this is a 64Gb SSD, instead of 128Gb.

For about $70 more he can get an integrated 8 core intel cpu, but remove 2 of the seagate HDDs from your build.

Eh. The NAS machine I built for a mate had a bloody Xeon 1230 V3 and had a SSD for Intel RST...

Tad bit overkill?

It would help if the OP gave use some of his planned use cases. If he plans to stream content around his home, then we could understand if he may need a better CPU and/or RAM.

Tad bit overkill?

I guess so. It has 4x 1TB WD Velociraptors and a Corsair LS 60GB HDD and 8GB of RAM. It's also got a 2x 10Gbps Intel NIC (all desktops have 10Gbps NICs and their house is on CAT6a). It is used for streaming full 1080p 5.1 BluRay rips to 4 devices at any one time, and running a few VM's. Did I mention the HTPC I built for them has a 780?
