Linux.org isn't an official site, it's community driven. Linux started as a kernel, and has always been a kernel. However, the kernel is the most important part of an operating system, so it became synonymous with operating system. Doesn't always mean they're the same. When people say Linux, they usually refer to a specific Linux distribution, and only some actually differentiate between kernel and distribution like they're supposed to.

Bolded, for emphasis. Without the Linux kernel, Linux and it's many distributions wouldn't exist. Saying the Linux kernel isn't Linux is just ... -facepalm-

No you are turning things, out of context, to try and prove me wrong, because you are pissed off that someone is not agreeing with you, that Linux is the best thing in the world in every possibly way, forged from the fire of perfection.

if you were actually confident , you wouldn't need to imply your emotions and try to educate us properly.

nobody said linux is the best thing in the world in this thread btw, stop trying to make things up to attempt to gain power.

gaining power meaning gaining control to defend your point of view.

i'm educating people properly in many ways.

here's 4 things i'm already doing , that aren't involved with linux vs windows :

- how to debate properly and giving tips so you know how to debate

- showing a phew examples of rhetorical speech and it's power in a debate.

I think there are many cases where a terminal would be faster and less work compared to a GUI:

1) Take any output (e.g. logs, netstat, ps) and quickly parse it to get the exact information you want. Optionally feed it back into another command. Pipe and redirect gives you unlimited options for this.

2) Take some task and automate it in a script. Copy what you just did and paste it into a file.

3) The terminal puts most things one command away. If you remember the command it can be faster than navigating a menu structure.

4) Do all of the above at once on as many machines as you have access to over SSH.

It works out well for Linux where most software is mostly configured with plain text files.

I still like having a web UI for common tasks though.

My weird dialect of referring to Linux distros as just "Linux" instead of the kernel to purposely twist arguments to his own view? Yeah, I'm the weird one.

i meant by the weird dialect that says user interfaces aren't user friendly.

You can have UIs that aren't user friendly. Command prompts/terminals typically aren't user friendly, nor are administrator tools.

I was referring the need to use the Terminal to do a bunch of stuff in most Linux distros in this case though.

the windows command prompt is the worse thing that exists, that thing is stupidly a pain in the ass, that's why people think that linux distributions are super complicated when they're not really that bad for home use.

the terminal isn't really too hard & there's documentation to learn how to do things & that explain what you're doing so you can learn more about it, unlike in Microsoft's website that only gives you the solution when using the command prompt.

Maybe because all of the documentation for the command prompt is in command prompt itself...?

OW MY GAWD!

Love to see all of you replying, but I am NEVER going to read all of this! :D

tl:dr:

It's subjective, but here's some arguments for either side! (Mac not included)

Windows has better app support, is more common and therefore has a bigger base of guys to help you out with issues

Win 7 vs 8: 7 = 8+ClassicShell+Performance boost

LInux is cheaper than the above, more customizable, is way better for productivity and you get to be one of the cool guys^^

Which linux:

Productivity: Gnome-environments like fedora or ubuntuGnome

Windows 7-ish: Mint, Any other linux os in it's KDE version

Looks for the few people who like, just kinda weird for most people: Ubuntu

Although not everyone will agree with this.

Stuff I have I like: Moto G - Superlux HD681 Evo - Monoprice 9927

90% of what I say is sarcasm.

I went the windows 8 way with a start button (not classicShell, something similar).

In combo with my SSD, this thing is blazing fast.

Still going to install dual-boot with Ubuntu when I have time :)

Classic shell was just meant to be an example. But go do dat dual boot! Just install it on the hdd, it loads in 10-20 secs anyways.

windows 7 would be good for productivity and gaming but when steam properly goes over to linux that could be your best bet. perhaps do a dual boot with windows 7 and linux (probably Ubuntu would be best)

Yup I know :(

Just going to try it when the new OS x comes out, I have a haswell chip for the moment :)

but to keep in mind, get a gigabyte motherboard, particularly one with Msata, as if you want to use a boot SSD, the only one you can use it as Msata, 2.5" ssds won't be detected

also, gigabyte motherboards are the motherboards that most users use for a hackintosh, keep that in mind
