So, It seems that haswell has came and made a big name for itself, now, what to choose?

BUILD: Project Scorpio

DATE: 6/8/2013

BUDGET: $3000 for main components.

I've been wanting to do this for awhile, I've built many a PC's and done tons a cable management. but now its time tighten the belt, brush off the screwdrivers and build what I call Project Scorpio

Many people have called me crazy for what I wanna put in there, but since Haswell has launched and surpassed my original planning, do i got with a X79 platform or Z87? Project Scorpio started as a x79 build, but with the improvements Haswell brought on. It seems like a viable choice. So, i need the forums help, Do I got X79 as planned or jump ship to Haswell?

Parts lists are as follows.

X79: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/ArkAngel_X/saved/1JkR

&

Z87: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/ArkAngel_X/saved/L6l

NOTE: the MoBo is a place holder for the Maximus VI Formula.

Aesthetics wise it'll be a Black and White build using a full custom watercooling loop using black and white as the color scheme for the loop aswell.

What is your usage scenario? If you plan to do video or photo editing and rendering, going for the X79 build is a good choice. For anything else, the 4770k is a good choice, as there wont be much of a difference in performance in games between the two. Two other things are that you really don't need the 1866 MHz or 2133 MHz RAM, as there is no performance increase, unless you're running an APU. Also, the 1200w PSU is overkill for both of the rigs, as Linus used a 550w PSU in his build guide with a 4770k and a GTX 780.

Oh and also why would you buy the h220 if you plan on doing a full custom watercooling loop?

What are you planning to do with this build?

We can't really help you without knowing this because if you're just going to do gaming than the cheaper Z87 build will be more than enough and if you're doing video editing than neither build is optimal.

15" MBP TB

AMD 5800X | Gigabyte Aorus Master | EVGA 2060 KO Ultra | Define 7 || Blade Server: Intel 3570k | GD65 | Corsair C70 | 13TB

I agree that for purely gaming, an i5 4670k would be a better choice, but for video editing, what would you change? I thought a 3930k and a GTX 780 would be a good combination for video editing, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'd rather have a 3960x.

OP: What editing software are you using and can they use CUDA?

I'm not sure which ssd is for what so I'll just say what I would do.

Samsung 840 250GB for boot/apps.

2 Kingston SSDnow v300 120GBs OR 2 Samsung 840 250GBs in raid 0 depending on how big of a scratch disk you need/want.

Get a cheaper psu? That thing is up the butt overkill.
