Hello,

I want to upgrade my computer for Christmas, but i am unsure what to upgrade it with to get the most performance benefit. My specs are:

Core i5 3330

12GB Ram

Geforce GTX 660 Gigabyte Overclocked

MSI B75A-G43 Motherboard

I mainly use this computer for heavy gaming, running servers and a little bit of content creation here and there. I notice a lot of slowdown when i am running a server and playing a game at the same time and sometimes that has massive FPS drops.

I have set aside £400 to upgrade the machine. What should i upgrade and to what to get the best value for money and for my performance to be the best it can be? Bear in mind my preference is Intel and Nvidia. Nothing against AMD, its just what i am used to.

@kalum0101, if you upgraded your motherboard to a Z97 motherboard you'd have much more options for upgrading. Like, for instance, you could upgrade your CPU to an i5 4690K. This would help in gaming somewhat. To tell you the truth, the GTX 660 is actually a decent GPU, it could just be your CPU bottlenecking your performance in games. :)

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

@Geekazoid I'll have a think about it. I was thinking of taking a leap into the socket 1150 platform or even go as far as 2011 if i had the money. Then i would be able to have headroom for upgrades down the road.

If you are only gaming, LGA 2011 will do nothing to benefit you compare to the LGA 1150. Heck even if you do work if it's not heavy enough the 2011 will not show anything better than 1150.

You current CPU and Mobo is ok, you can get a GTX 970 right now first, just leave your mobo/CPU for now, when something newer than the Haswell Refresh series come out in the future and you feel like the CPU speed is not good enough anymore then you can upgrade it.
