I'd think this community is pretty darn trustable

Depends on user to user. I have only ever sold a single item, have made no purchases. Just look for people with good reputations around here for good reasoning. I.E.: Ignore the trolls?

Does anyone know how reliable the classifieds section is for purchasing things?

 

Completely fine, provided you pay with PayPal and use "buyer protection"

 

I've bought/sold well over $2000 worth of things on the classifieds, without any issues whatsoever. (Had one issue, but was the shipping companies fault, and it got fixed in the end)

Just ALWAYS make sure you fill out PayPal invoices when buying/selling, as added protection.
