often you can get free collage/university keys. I know Catia/Solid Works, Autodesk do something like that. i would check for something like that.

Don't you get a student's license in College?

We got a free license for Siemens Unigraphics (I think it was NX6).

Aside from that, Dassault's CATIA is also quite popular in the industry.

There are others (see the list at the bottom of the Wikipedia articles), but those

two are the major ones which were always mentioned in our courses. If you want to

do professional CAD/CAM/CAE in the industry, you're quite likely to end up working

with one of them.

I highly doubt that there's a legal way for you to acquire that software aside from

getting it via your university (except of course paying the full price  ).

I would say wait until you get to college and see what programs they use. It really depends on the college, and usually, the colleges will have free licenses for the required programs. If not, they will usually have a computer lab so you can do all of your work without having to pay 1000s of dollars on CAD programs.

It's a community college so I'm not sure how extensive their program is, I had a buddy that went there he said to go take them aswell, because my other career plans had to change, so I'm trying to figure out what's next

I'll see if I can find the email for the teachers and just ask em, thanks :D

Maya and 3ds Max can be aquired with a student key (You can sign up for it without needing any proof of being a student)

Cinema 4D is also rad and my favourite. However it is expensive.

Maya and 3Ds Max are really the standard though.

Aren't those more 3d modelling and effects and not CAD? Because that's quite a different thing.

Wow, that is embarrassing. I read the original post entirely wrong haha.

Ah well, it happens. I once gave a wrong GPU recommendation because I clicked on the wrong

review in my Google results (which was about a specific set of benchmarks with a specific

set of settings) and didn't catch that it was a special case. Luckily, my mistake was caught

by others.

PTC Creo (formerly Pro E) is free for students and really easy to pick up on. Autodesk Inventor is also free for students, and has more features than PTC (it also is used much more in professional settings). These two I listed can be gotten from their websites without having to go through your college, as long as you say your a student and give some info regarding your graduation status and such.

To my knowledge Solidworks does not offer a student edition for free, which is unfortunate because it is used in most professional settings. Sometimes Solidworks has a deal with a school, but even then they rarely allow students to have the program for free (usually only a discount).

Autodesk Inventor is the main 3D CAD software. Solidworks is a good 3D Cad software, but I prefer Inventor. AutoCAD is the main 2D CAD software available if you do 2D. If you are a student or a teacher, you can get Autodesk inventor Pro or AutoCAD for free through Autodesk's education service. This is an amazing deal considering the immense cost on Autodesk's side to provide this bonus. I personally use Inventor all the time and I can grantee you that it works very well.

As a person who works for NASA i can tell you this, there are 2 main programs that most companies use. PTC Creo (Pro/E), or Solidworks. I personally think that its better to learn Pro/E over Solidworks mostly because it is very widely used. Also its really straightforward and easy to learn, which is why NASA uses it.

There is a student version available for college students for both programs.

P.S.: If you do go with Pro/E and you install it on your machine just know the application is named Wildfire 5.

  • 1 month later...

NX 8, solidworks, Autodesk inventor are the most common ones that ive heard of. A lot of times you get a key that get these programs for free.

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

The ones I used primarily in my undergrad were Solidworks and NX5. ProE was also used by a handful of TAs and Profs I know. Solidworks is fairly easy to learn, and has a wide range of tools. Personally haven't used ProE, so can't comment on it.

At school we use Autodesk Inventor, and it's my understanding that it's pretty popular in the professional world as well. As a student, you can get it for free by signing up, with no requirement to prove that you are actually a student. Here's the link: http://students.autodesk.com/ I have Inventor and 3DS max off there and they work exactly the same as the pro version except that you're not licensed to use it for commercial use (which you won't be using it for anyway).
