Hands down the best card you can get unless you do SLI.

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

We're not buying cats to stick in our systems for good performance. xD

On a serious note, that is a nice GPU.

LOL, yea card not cat.

*Calls Newegg for RMA*

"Hello? I'd like to RMA my cat as it came as a DOA when I put it in the computer and turned it on."

*hangs up instantly*

I wonder how they would handle that situation..

I have one...

Good:

  • see everyone else's posts

Bad:

  • ASIC on my "gauntlet chip" is 69% (tehe)
  • hit and miss on fitment in smaller cases
  • stock fan profile is too high at low temps and dosnt keep the card below the 61degree gpuboost cealing
  • GPUboost 2.0 is too aggressive, reduced overvolt as early as 61 degrees (gtx980 related, not specific to this card) - would liked to have seen Gigabyte change the BIOS to suit their 600w cooler and "overclocking" orientated chip (maybe Nvidia layed down the law?)
  • Every time NVidia release a new driver my max stable core/mem speeds change (NVidia related, not specific to this card)

A day in the life of a gtx980 G1 Gaming owner:

For maximum performance I run core at about 1.5ghz boost, mem at about 7.8ghz. power limit @ 122% and core volt at maximum (1.256v) - I created a custom fan profile to be fans off at less than 40deg and fans at 70% @ 60c - this usually keeps the core below 60c and stops the voltage dropping to 1.231v (1.231v is not stable at 1.5ghz) - 70% is audible and I am pissed off that I have a massive ass cooler and yet can still hear my card, I would gladly let the card run at 75c under load if it would simply stop reducing more core volts...

To keep the card inaudible and running stock fan speeds I run a clock speed of 1.46ghz core, mem at 7.8ghz. power limit @ 122% and core volt at a maximum (1.256v) - when the card reaches over 61 degrees the core volt drops to 1.231v and reduces the boost clock by about 10mhz at the same time. this is stable and the card runs at about 70 degrees under full load.

Why does the extra 50mhz help? because 4k... for 1440/1080 I would just leave it running the 1.46ghz settings.

AMD make me facepalm with their stock coolers and high TDP/performance

Nvidia make me facepalm with their locked down (and poorly thought out) GPUboost 2.0 settings... I don't really want to flash the BIOS in this card but I will just to stop the devolt at 61 degrees.
