CPU overheating - Need better cooling

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

Fractal Design Define R4 comes to mind.

Hi, I received a new PC with a non-overclocked i5 4690K as CPU. It has the stock fan on.

Issue is, the case I have seems to be inadequate. This is the case: http://www.itek.it/it/prodotti-itek-97/case/micro-atx-case/item/362-case-shadow-midi-tower-ce-matx-500w-full-black

It's rather small and it has no included fans; so the CPU runs at 48~C degrees idle and reaches 100C degrees when put under heavy load. Removing the side panel of the case barely changes anything, it just takes a little longer for the CPU to reach critical temperatures.

So I thought about getting a heatsink to replace the stock one on the CPU, but both I don't know if it would be enough (I mean, if I didn't OC maybe it would but I'm afraid it would become a problem again if I decided to OC my CPU) and I don't know if any good fan would fit in such a small case. So I think I might also need to get a new case, and I'd like to get something larger (so the parts aren't almost squished together like now) and with good ventilation, as well as optimal performance when combined with a good CPU cooler (air only). I would like to stay under 150 euros of budget.

Suggestions? Thank you in advance.

replacing the tower is much much better.

You might be able to put a hyper 212 EVO in it,
But a Hyper TX3 EVO should fit without any problems But it doesnt perform as good.

Il come back in a minute or two when i have found a case that both looks good, are big enough while not being too big and fits a 212 evo.

Getting a different cooler will most likely have minimal changes. An air cooler isn't effective when there is no air for it to use(wrong word?). Best option is to get a budget case(one that has fans) and a hyper 212 evo.

have to agree. that case is gonna do nothing but hold in the heat like an oven

I'd get some [decent] fans or a different chassis if possible.

Thank you all for your quick and useful responses. I'm glad to see that more or less everyone agrees that the case's the issue.

So here are the actual parts:

At this point I'd like to know what's a case that is not too expensive, that doesn't have an included PSU (would be a waste of money), that is large enough to fit all components while keeping a good air flow and that is not too flashy/good looking - I don't care about how ugly it is as long as it keeps the insides cool.

This. R4 is on larger side (being full tower) but it will keep everything cool. If you have extra money, get another 140mm fan for it and run 2 intakes + 1 exhaust config. It comes with 2 fans.

Until then, flip your rear fan around to be intake. Stock cooler is exhausting towards side air vent so this way it will get more fresh air.

This tower doesn't have a rear fan. The only fans in the whole rig are the PSU's, the GPU's and the CPU's.

I'll look into the R4 today and post back.

Oh? The link shows it having spot for it on back.

Correct, but it didn't come with any included fan. I don't feel confident that adding a fan there would solve the issue, as it'd still have to be of very limited dimensions.

Ah. Its true it wouldn't do much but it will help. I know that from own experience with my previous case. Adding extra side intake made real difference for GPU cooling.

You're incorrect. It does have a rear fan. http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2012/07/fractal-design-define-r4-review/define_r4-24b.jpg

We found out there was an issue with the stock fan, it wasn't mounted correctly. After fixing that, even with no other cooling system the CPU could run prime95 without reaching 90C. For now other tests need to be done because a strange buzz is coming out of the CPU or the motherboard when 3D graphics are rendered but ultimately I think that for now I'll just apply a regular fan on the case. If that doesn't suffice, I'll likely get one of the ones suggested in this thread. Thank you very much for your help.
