Blu-ray vs DVD. Is it worth spending more?

Stav Kats

I didn't know where to post this topic, so I decided to post it here.

So my question is how much better blu-ray is compared to dvd in sound quality, visual quality, e.t.c. Also if a DVD version of something is 10$ cheaper than the Blu-ray version, is it worth spending 10$ more to get the Blu-ray version.(I already own a PS3)

Thanks in advance!

In my opinion it is, since Blu-ray discs have significantly higher sound and visual quality than a DVD. Unfortunately they still only store the movie at 1080p, but it's still noticeably better than a DVD. Expect disc-based media to begin to dwindle in the near future though, as cloud computing and other technologies begin to take over.

First ask yourself: Is DVD better than VHS?

Then remember that the difference between DVD and Blu-ray is bigger than the difference between DVD and VHS.

Blu-rays are a LOT better. Even though the are 'only' at 1080p, both the audio and video bit rates are much much higher. I'd pick Blu-ray over DVD any day.

The quality dfference depends on the TV you are using. On my main tv I couldn't see a difference, as its only pretty cheap, whereas on my PC monitor (top of the line) I could very clearly see the difference and I cannot watch DVD's on it anymore it just looks horrible.

I like Blu-ays because some movies play in 48fps compared to standard 24fps which is awesome, the quality is better as well. I have no idea what will come next for 4k as even a blu ray cant store that much.

Yes I much prefer Blu Ray, but I still buy DVDs. it all depends on the film . . . and the transfer, I have a pretty vast DVD collection and will only buy the blu ray if I think the transfer's worth it. . . . Some of my favourites include

The Thin Redline
Seven
Taxi Driver
Zodiac
Identity

Gladiator (Pocket Blu Edition)

Some transfers are horrible though, with artifacts and digital noise reduction, which really softens the image and can loose detail, Terminator 2 is pretty bad, and Predator, also Pans Labyrinth looks horrendous for DNR. . . Ocean's 11 is also a very poor transfer. . I tend to do abit of research into the transfer before buying. (geek)
