I'm currently using a 120hz monitor from Samsung back from 2011. It's still pretty nice but I was thinking of upgrading now that the 144hz monitors are coming down in price. The new ones probably have way better colors than my current model.

My current monitor is: Samsung S23A950D

Should I upgrade? Will anything be better than this? Or is this good for a while still and should I wait till later.

Btw I'm playing on a GTX970, playing in 1080p atm but considering a 1440p monitor in the future. I'm very new to these newer resolutions so I'm not too sure what to get. There's 1080p, then 1440p, and then what? 4k afterwards? I'm not interested in 4k atm because it seems really expensive and GPUs don't run it very well FPS wise from most benchmarks I've seen.

Most people here will recommend that you go with the ASUS ROG Swift, but it is quite an expensive monitor ($700 - $1,000 depending on your location) and so it would be quite an investment and so you've got to ask yourself, is that an investment you're willing to make?

What about this one: http://www.amazon.com/VG248QE-24-inch-LED-lit-Monitor-response/dp/B00B2HH7G0/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1414986883&sr=8-6&keywords=asus+rog+swift+pg278q

Honestly back in 2011 when I bought my Samsung it was very expensive as 120hz monitors were not cheap back then. I don't see why anyone would buy the rog swift? Ok it supports G-sync, I haven't compared the specs specifically but compared to the one I listed you could buy 3 of those for a rog swift. They are 144hz and Asus as well. Not sure what all the hype about G-sync is I guess if you got $1000 laying around for that much I could finish my new PC build.

I wasn't actually suggesting you get it. It was more hypothetical. That monitor you listed does seem quite popular too. I have seen several members on here who own that exact monitor. Although, I do have to ask, does it have to be a 144Hz or even a 120Hz one? Because, as @dylan43270, pointed out, you could go with a 29" ultrawide 2560x1080 display. Most people like them for their immersive experience. But it's up to you mate. :)
