Installing Windows to A:\ Drive: Is that a thing?

MdX MaxX

So my new SSD gets here next week!  I'll finally be doing a fresh install of Windows.  Haven't done so since building my rig haha.

Anyway, I'm wondering whether there's an easy way to set the drive letter assignment for the system drive prior to or during Windows installation.

I've done some Google searching but haven't come up with a clear answer.

I'll probably try plugging in the new SSD and assigning the letter to it, then installing Windows to it, hopefully retaining the drive letter.  If there are tried and true methods then I'd like to know.

Why do I want to do this?  Just for kicks. :P I'd like to have my system on A:\ and my HDD on B:\ just so it makes more sense haha.

if you are doing a clean install of windows you can change it there i believe...also you can go into disk management (in control panel)and change it there

I think you can't do it because even if you reinstall windows it formats the drive and sets it as C. If you where to change the drive letter it would screw up everything and nothing would be where it should be according to windows. so to my knowledge you cant.

I don't think you can do that on the active Windows drive.

Yes, you can't do it on a drive that's being used.

I know it would mess up things if it were done post-install, but if done pre-install wouldn't all the registry values and such adjust to match?

There might not be a way to do it cleanly, I don't know, just wondering if anyone knows.
