Why look for a flat cable?

 

Flat cable keeps them from tangling...

 

 

My checklist:

Price

Sound quality (depending on your tastes)

Build quality

cable thickness/gauge

plug materials and design

symmetric/asymmetric design

 

If you're considering the JVC Gumy earbuds, I suggest not to get them (the sample unit that I tried almost gave me a headache) and look at the Sennheiser MX400II instead...
